IELTS Life Skills – Level A1
What’s in the IELTS Life Skills test?
Face-to-face Speaking and Listening test
You will take the test with an examiner, and with one other candidate.
The tasks in IELTS Life Skills are designed to reflect the everyday experience of communicating
in an English-speaking country.
Phase 1a Phase 2a
Answer personal questions on different subject areas such as Listen to 2 short recordings. First, listen for the general topic
work, study etc. 4-5 min and choose an answer from 3 options. Then, listen again for 2
pieces of specific information in order to answer the exam-
Phase 1b iner’s questions. 4 min
Ask your partner some questions on a topic given by the
examiner. When you are finished, your partner will ask you Phase 2b
questions on a different topic. You have 1 and a half minute You are given a topic to talk about with your partner. This is a
to prepare for this phase. 5 min general discussion where you share ideas and opinions. 3-4 min
Total Time 16-18 min
Short discussions on everyday subjects including:
· Personal details / Experiences · Health · Housing
· Family and friends · Leisure · Weather.
· Buying goods · Education / Training
· Work · Transport
You will be expected to:
- listen and respond to spoken language, including simple narratives, statements,
questions and single-step instructions
- communicate basic information, feelings and opinions on familiar topics
- talk with another person in a familiar situation about familiar topics.
Tasks may include:
- describing - asking for information or - deciding
- giving opinions descriptions - suggesting
- giving personal information - agreeing and disagreeing - selecting
- stating preferences - explaining, giving reasons
- commenting or justifying
